In addition to the founder being a libertarian Whole Foods does a lot of community giving and microcredit programs. People complain about the higher cost there but to me even without the feel good aspect it’s worth it just to be able to select portion sizes I want. The meat department will cut any kind of meat however you want it (they look at you like you’re crazy at Schucks if you want just part of a chicken breast) and they have small containers of many fruits and vegetables.
