The Latest Argument Against Charter Schools

Some people think single-sex charter schools are un-American (thanks to Edspresso for the link):

* The American Civil Liberties Union and National Organization for Women say [single-sex classrooms] would diminish the effects of Title IX, which calls for federally funded educational institutions to treat males and females equally in schools and in sports.

* When you segregate classes, students learn less about tolerance and what it means to be American.

I understand that meeting kids of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds at school could prepare kids for being good citizens. But do we need schools to introduce the sexes to each other in preparation for citizenship? Most kids have siblings, cousins, or neighbors of the opposite sex. They can meet others through extracurricular activities or family friends. The academic and social value of single-sex education is debatable. However, there’s no direct relationship between coed classrooms and democracy.

On second thought, maybe there is. I’m a better citizen when I’m surrounded by cute guys.
